How is BOTOX® used to enhance facial features?

Think outside the BOTOX box. While BOTOX is famously used to rewind the clock by preventing and reducing signs of aging, dentists use BOTOX® injections to alleviate painful dental conditions.

BOTOX, or botulinum toxin, is a purified protein injected directly into the muscle that causes them to relax and that restructures collagen. BOTOX is commonly used to soften the appearance of wrinkles and give the skin a more radiant quality, but it can also be used therapeutically to:

  • Halt bruxism (grinding of teeth)
  • Relieve muscle soreness associated with the temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD)
  • Treat migraines

How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX blocks signals from motor neurons (nerves) to muscles. BOTOX works as a neuromodulator to relax injected muscles by preventing the release of acetylcholine temporarily. Acetylcholine is the principal neurotransmitter that constricts smooth muscles.

When BOTOX is injected, muscles are paralyzed and lines and wrinkles fade. BOTOX injections release gradually and can take up to two weeks to take full effect.

Why is BOTOX use skyrocketing?

Many people search for a fountain of youth, but could it be in a vial of BOTOX? BOTOX can be an effective way to look more refreshed and years younger without risking safety. It’s a minimally invasive, safe alternative to plastic surgery.

In comparison to plastic surgery, some benefits of BOTOX are:

  • Takes only 10-30 minutes
  • More affordable
  • Can be covered by insurance for specific conditions (like migraines)
  • No downtime
  • Noticeable results in 7-10 days after injection
  • Complications are rare and reversible

Even if patients don’t have wrinkles just yet, BOTOX® injections can prevent wrinkles from permanently setting in. A growing number of young Canadians are using BOTOX for its anti-aging benefits. By temporarily paralyzing the face with BOTOX injections, young patients prevent wrinkles and lines from forming in the first place.

How can BOTOX enhance aesthetics?

BOTOX can be injected into many muscles to prevent and soften lines and wrinkles. It’s most commonly injected into the face to smooth overlying skin. Our BOTOX specialists discuss goals and create a treatment plan for an overall, satisfying result.

BOTOX can soften lines in the upper face:

  • Forehead lines
  • Glabella (frown) lines between the eyebrows, also known as the ‘’eleven’’ lines
  • “Bunny lines” on top of the nose
  • Droopy, hooded eyelids
  • “Crow’s feet” at the corners of the eyes
  • Eye bags

BOTOX can reduce signs of aging in the lower face:

  • Smoker’s lines around the mouth and achieve a ‘’lip flip’’, making the lips look fuller
  • Jaw (to prevent bruxism)
  • Chin
  • Neck

What To Expect During BOTOX Treatment

When you arrive at our clinic in Whitehorse, BOTOX treatments typically take 10-30 minutes. Many people conveniently receive BOTOX injections during their lunch breaks. BOTOX injections are virtually pain-free, but we can prep the areas with ice or numbing cream if you are concerned about discomfort. Our doctors inject BOTOX into targeted muscles. Patients may return to regular activities after BOTOX treatment. Avoid touching injection sites to reduce the risk of tenderness and sensitivity.

The results of BOTOX appear about a week after injection, with peak results at around two weeks. BOTOX improves the complexion and texture of the skin. Many people also feel relief from tension and migraines.

BOTOX is not a permanent treatment. The results of BOTOX injections last for a few months
