What is a Periodontist, and What Can They Do For You?

A periodontist is a specialized dentist who focuses on preventing, treating, and managing gum diseases and performing dental implantations. The periodontist receives extensive training and further studies to be certified to perform certain periodontal treatments.

What are the Signs You Need to See a Periodontist?

Gum disease is an ongoing infection in the gums. If left untreated, this can lead to bone and tooth loss. You may not know it, but you may already have gum disease. Here are some signs and symptoms to look out for:

  • Tender gums that are inflamed, red, and swollen
  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Changes in your bite
  • Visible pus between gums and teeth
  • Pain when chewing
  • Teeth that have become loose
  • Receding gums or teeth that have seemed to pull away from the gums
  • A bad taste that won’t go away

These are conditions that need to be seen immediately by a periodontist. Your regular dentist may refer you to one as needed. You must have your gums checked regularly, even before these signs appear.

Get Help for Your Gums Today

Gum disease can only get worse if you don’t get it treated. It’s not something you can hope to go away on its own. At Riverstone Dental, our periodontist can plan and perform gum disease treatment options for you as needed. Depending on the severity of your gum disease, Dr. Shamsher Sandlas can do the following procedures:

  • Scaling and Root Planing: Performed under local anesthesia, scaling is done to remove tartar and plaque near and around the gumline. The teeth are smoothened by planing so the gums can reattach to them.
  • Bone Surgery: Bone grafts can be done to help regrow bones that have been degraded by gum disease. Recontouring may also be required in some cases.
  • Laser Gum Surgery: Laser gum surgery is a less invasive procedure than other gum surgery methods. As such, there is minimal downtime.
  • Dental Implants: The periodontist can also take care of the placements of dental implants.
  • Extractions: In extreme tooth degradation, extraction can be done when the tooth can no longer be saved.

We understand that there are patients who are uncomfortable and get anxious easily with dental procedures. Our periodontist is licensed to perform all these under IV sedation. He can administer nitrous and oral sedation as well. You are assured of a safe, comfortable, and pain-free procedure with our fully trained periodontist. Get the best care possible from our highly trained and highly skilled periodontist at Riverstone Dental.
